How to make student accommodation safe using security systems
When it comes to break-ins and burglary, student accommodation is often targeted, as high-value laptops, TVs and entertainment systems, are often left in plain view and unsecured against intruders. University-provided halls of residence tend to implement advanced security systems, such as video surveillance and access control, to maintain a safe and secure environment for younger students who are living away from home for the first time.
Landlords of privately rented student properties must also ensure the safety and well-being of their tenants. Implementing extra security measures is an effective way to prevent incidents.
· Intruder Alarm Systems
Installing an intruder alarm system is a simple deterrent against burglary. The presence of an illuminated bell box on the front a property warns thieves that the premises is protected, and may sound an alarm in the event of a break in, which will alert those inside, as well as others in the area (especially in densely populated student areas). Not only can intruder alarms unnerve criminals who may attempt to access the property, but having a comprehensive alarm system in place can bring down insurance premiums.
· Locks
With a quick turnover for student tenancies, it’s all too easy to assume that previous tenants have handed their keys back. While this may well be the case, extra copies could have been made by either former residents or contractors, putting the property at risk. It is therefore important to keep on top of the locking systems that are in place, when they were last replaced and how the copy of keys is controlled. It is the landlord’s responsibility to install quality locks and it is suggested to use patented keys which can’t be copied without proof of ownership, or restricted keys which can’t be easily duplicated due to their unique design.
· Security Lighting
Lighting installed at the entrances of student housing can help to improve security. Whether students are arriving back late from a club, or an all-night study session at the library, they need to be safe entering and leaving the student accommodation at all hours. As well as preventing common accidents like slips, trips and falls, security lighting can also prevent people from hanging around outside a property, deterring crime.
